Why Salt?
Salt is Magic + Science

Salt is fascinating. Not just because of how it’s used spiritually, but because almost every culture, religion, and science throughout history has recognized that there is something special about salt.
Over the past year, as I’ve gone deeper into energy work, Feng Shui, space clearing, and understanding how homes and people hold energy, salt has become one of the simplest and most powerful tools I use. Not as a dramatic “good versus evil” barrier the way it’s often portrayed in movies, but as a neutralizer, stabilizer and a way to help energy move, settle, and reset. Because energy moves through everything even salt.
The Science of Salt
Salt is a mineral, arranged in a stable crystalline structure. The way the crystals are organized, salt naturally interacts with moisture, ions, and particles within the environment. One of salt’s most important properties is that it attracts and absorbs water molecules from the surrounding air. As moisture is pulled toward salt, airborne particles can become trapped or weighed down with it. This is one reason salt has historically been used for preservation, purification, and environmental stabilization.
Salt also dissolves into positively charged sodium ions and negatively charged chloride ions, making it highly electrically responsive in the presence of water. Our bodies hold salt and our bodies are electrical systems constantly interacting with the environment around us. Salt in our bodies interact with our nerve signaling, muscle movement, and hydration balance. It’s why we take electrolyts or pickle juice for leg cramps - the salt.
Salt environments are also naturally antimicrobial. Salt disrupts moisture balance for bacteria, mold, and certain airborne contaminants. Maybe this is why people tend to gravitate to the ocean. Ocean air contains aerosolized salt particles and high concentrations of negative ions generated through moving water, crashing waves, and the atmosphere. Studies on negative ion environments suggest they may support nervous system regulation, mood stabilization, reduced stress perception, and improved air quality through particle neutralization. When you spend time near the ocean, your breathing deepens, your nervous system settles and your mental state quiets, and you feels recalibrated.
Spaces Hold Energy
In Feng Shui and energetic practices, salt is often placed in corners or areas where energy feels stagnant - dusty corners. Salt absorbs the moisture, settles particles, stabilizes environments, and creates a subtle shift in the air of the space. To me, salt acts less like a magical barrier and more like a room energy cleanser. It helps spaces stop “holding on” to so much.
This is something I’ve experienced over and over again in homes and workspaces. Take massage rooms, Chiropractic offices, Airbnb’s, Homes during divorce or grief. These spaces often carry scattered energy from so many different people moving through them rapidly having different emotions, intentions, stress levels, and frequencies. These spaces hold layers and layers of human emotion and experience. When people are cycling in and out of a room, their energetic imprint stays in that space. Even if you don’t physically see it, you feel it by: heaviness, exhaustion, restlessness, and just not able to fully relax. The space never fully settles.
How I Use Salt
By placing bowls or cups of salt in certain areas of a home, I’ve noticed spaces begin to feel lighter, calmer, and more neutral over time.
I also use salt sprays on furniture, mirrors, entryways, and objects that may be carrying emotional residue from previous owners or experiences. No, I don’t believe every antique chair or thrift store dresser is haunted. Most of the time, what people are feeling isn’t necessarily a spirit, but an emotional imprint. Furniture, artwork, and objects sit with us during grief, arguments, illness, love, stress, joy, and everyday life. Over time, they can begin holding the “feel” of those experiences. That’s especially true with secondhand furniture or family heirlooms. Sometimes things simply need to be grounded and reset so the energy can move again.
Ok, every once in a while, yes, there are spirits attached to objects. I once had an old radio from my mother-in-law that had a spirit in the inside of it. Artwork can occasionally do this too - ever feel like eyes watching you. But honestly, that’s not the majority of cases, and not everything needs some dramatic spiritual cleansed. Most spaces simply need balance and salt helps with the room to simply exhale.
To me, salt acts like an energetic filter. It helps settle the room, pull heaviness out of the atmosphere, and create space for clarity, calmness. Salt is probably the simplest, most accessible, and most powerful tool I have in my entire tool chest.
It’s ancient, It’s scientific, It’s grounding, AND YES It’s magical. The best of all worlds. SALT!
